In Thomas and Friends, Derek is a hard-working and friendly diesel who is keen to impress, this led to his teething troubles which he was pretty embarrassed about.
Biography
In Thomas and Friends season 5 episode "Double Teething Troubles" Derek arrives in Sodor and as Sir Topham Hatt suspected he would end up overheating and breaking down on Gordon's Hill. BoCo rescued him and word got out about his teething troubles, Bill and Ben mistook this as having a toothache. Derek would get another chance the next day when he and Bill & Ben were ordered to take a train across the quarry. Derek would overheat once again on a hill and Bill & Ben would have to rescue him. He was then sent to the works to be mended.
Basis
In Thomas and Friends, Derek is based on a BR Class 17. One BR Class 17 is preserved with the rest being scrapped, most of them were put out of service in the mid-70s.

Model & TVS Background
In Thomas and Friends, Derek's model was made of perspex and fitted for gauge 1 track. His eyes were controlled by 2 servos that allowed his eyes to move up, down, and side to side.
Derek made a single appearance in "Double Teething Troubles" he has not been mentioned or seen since. He was also referred to as Paxman in the script, but due to the similarity to Pacman, they switched the name to Derek.
He was supposed to appear in a season 16 episode, he was written inside of the script as Paxman but this was mistaken for Paxton, another diesel.
Toys & Merchandise
- Thomas Wooden Railway Derek: This version of Derek has 2 versions, the old style, and the new style. The old-style was released in 2001 and discontinued in 2002. While the newer style would release in 2007.
- ERTL Derek: came out in 1999 and discontinued in 2004.
- Bandai TECs Derek: came out in 1999 and discontinued in 2005.
- Bandai Nakayoshi Derek: came out in 1995, and discontinued in 2003.
